Hello Katie! Thank you for speaking with me today!
Yes, thanks for having me!
Tell us about your latest release!
My latest release is a single called, "One Before The One." It's the fourth single that I've released off of my upcoming full length project and was named as a semi-finalist in the Unsigned Only Songwriting Competition in the Country Category. It's the last single I'll be releasing until the rest of the project comes out next month.
What was the creative process for it?
This was the last song I wrote in 2020; I remember I was doing laundry and the melody line for the chorus popped in my head, so I sat down to the piano and it all just sort of poured out. This song is my attempt at realizing that there’s no shame in the feelings that come with watching someone you once loved start a life with someone else. It’s something that I feel is “taboo” to talk about, but I think it’s only human to feel a little blindsided by that, no matter how long it’s been or how illogical it might be to feel that way.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Sara Bareilless, Ingrid Michaelson, and Maren Morris.
Who would be a dream collaboration for you?
Joy Williams. She is such an inspiration to me both as a vocalist and a songwriter. Writing and singing with her one day would literally be a dream!
Do you have a piece of advice you carry with you that you like to pass on to other musicians?
The biggest piece of advice I've ever received is to not let anyone else define what success means to you. At the end of the day, we are the only ones who can know "why," we are writing and releasing these songs, and we're the only ones who can define what that means to us. My goal as an artist is to connect, so regardless of whether that's 1-2 people or hundreds/thousands, it's still a successful release if I gave it my all and successfully connected with my audience.
Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
Yes! My full length LP, Limitless, will be out on April 22, 2022 on Earth Day! It's a 10 song record chronicling my journey from leaving Michigan before my move to Nashville. I took a long trip up to Alberta, Canada to find perspective in the mountains before I moved, and gained a lot of inspiration from the nature there along the way. (Hence the earth day release!) I've been working on it for the past 3+ years, so I'm quite excited to let it fly out into the world.
Please let everyone know where they can keep up with you and your music!
