Hi AVATARI! Thanks for being here today!
Thanks for having me!
Who are your main musical influences?
I'd say music from the '60s and '70s - The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. I'm obsessed with the spirit of freedom and experimentation from that time. Also, I tend to gravitate toward music that has a deeper message of hope and overcoming struggle - so artists like U2, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, and most recently Imagine Dragons and Coldplay really resonate with me and inspire me.
What do you enjoy most about being an artist?
I love being able to create, to connect, and to serve. There's nothing better than to be able to connect with other human beings through the process of making and sharing music. Getting to take something from the spark of an idea, to a fully realized song or recording, to collaborate with other artists who take your idea and add something incredible that you could never have imagined on your own, and then share it with a fan who hears the song and reflects back to you that it hits them right in the deepest place inside their soul. It's magic.
Of your own music, do you have a favorite song? If so, which song would that be?
Hmmm, I'm pretty excited about the next song I'm releasing - Superhuman. I love it because of the time and place that inspired me to write it. I was just about to become a dad, and my wife was going through her pregnancy. And I was basically in awe for nine months of the miraculous power of the human (especially female) body and mind to change and to create life. It changed me forever, in the best way imaginable. Not to mention getting to be in the room for the birth of my son, and getting to watch him grow. The cool thing about Superhuman is that it went from a song about witnessing my wife give birth, to a song about an even more universal message about the power within each one of us to effect positive change in our own lives.
How would you describe your music?
If I had to (lol) I'd describe it as epic alternative pop-rock. Influenced by music from the '60s and '70s and the summer of love. But with a modern twist.
If you were to create a band, who would you choose as your bandmates?
I guess I'd choose my dad and my son. My dad is an incredible guitarist and even got to open for The Doors in his heyday. And my son is only three, but he already plays a mean set of drums.
How often are you writing or creating new music?
All the time. Like right now, I'm actually writing a song.
If there were a movie made about you, what would the title be?
"You Get What You Need." Oh, wait, that might be taken by the time my biopic comes out... Ok, maybe we'll just go with AVATARI.
