Thank you for taking this interview! While your fans and new fans stream your music and read this interview, tell us the first thing that comes to mind that you're grateful for about your music career!
I am grateful that there are so many outlets for indie artists to be supported through publications like this and others. It is because of media like you we are able to be heard so thank you and thank you for the opportunity. I am equally grateful for you, my fans and those that believe in the art we deliver.
What kind of inspiration influences your music that fans would be surprised by?
What influences my music is actually not music. Anime, storylines, superheroes, doing what is right against all odds - that is what actually inspirites my artform and my music. LOVE. Behind everything I do as Celiane is truly love itself. I figured if I could create myself as something people would ask the question, “What is that?” and they could come to know and love Celiane and the trials of her journey, it would give a reference point of entertainment but also, someone that is way different from me has the same struggles and challenges as everyone else, then they can overcome them too; to find the love within yourself no matter who you are or what you carry inside of you. That is what drives the art.
Who has influenced you in your career?
Daft Punk and Herbie Hancock were two big influences for me, past and present. Growing up, I loved the videos that called out to me and were so different. Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes were big for this and I absolutely loved it. I would think, “Wow! What are they going to do next?” Shinske Nakamura is an artist I love to watch because he is himself, 100%. You can’t do what we do and not have some anchor in who you really are. You have to be you to do the outrageous and be able to live with it authentically.
Who is your biggest cheerleader in the industry? Why?
The biggest cheerleader for me in the industry honestly is my PR Queen, Tawanna Chamberlain. Tawanna has been the driving force behind me being known and believing in my art 100%. When I gather a team, they have to get what I am doing and where we are going. She does. Many times, she has to explain it to others and we get a lot of closed doors in our face because we are too risky. May actually assume instead of taking the time to really research who Celiane is. It’s too much work and easier to just say “No”. But that doesn’t stop us. Because the fans get it.
Who gives you the most critique? Why?
Who gives the most critique, honestly, is my children. I ask them too. They know everything that is going on at this time, the music, fashion, gossip, drama etc. They help me navigate and expand. I involved them because this is a legacy I am leaving them. When my time is done, there will be another techno human like being. Children are brutally honest. That is what I need to create masterpieces and let me tell you, they don’t sugar coat it either. From the music, to the look to the script of the show to everything- they are involved in the process. And our children have the best ideas because they know innately - they are born with creativity and ingenuity. So for me, they are the best ones to tell me - yes, no or get rid of it!
Do you often follow your heart or your brain when you have to make decisions in your career?
Too many times I follow my brain. I have a knack for knowing what people want to see. However, it is my art I am sharing with the world. The brain explains the logic but the heart is the real execution, because my art is based in love. There are times when I sacrifice heart for what is practical and that doesn’t always feel good. There are times I leave me out and lead by the head because of what is trending or people are used to, but thank good my team reminds me, at the heart of this train is me. So to be true to me.
Making decisions on how to go about your next project, what do those conversations sound like?
It is literally, “Okay where does the story leave off?” We pick up from where we left off in the story. I also look at , “What can we do differently?” It is just an evolution to the next stage. We build from there.
Give us a fun fact about your latest music!
A fun fact is my latest single is an ode to my roots.
Best advice you've received on making new music?
The best advice I have been given is do what the hell you want to do. Period. Make sure to put me in everything I do in my music and my fans will know I am authentic and will share the journey with me. Always be who I am.
Give us some advice when it comes to pushing forward in your career?
Let love be the reason behind your creation and don’t sacrifice who you really are in the process.
